Written for a younger audience, it eschews the historical trappings of Lawhead for the fantastical island of Fincayra, the Otherworld, where a blind teenage Merlin sojourns to discover his powers and morals.

One of the best adaptions of the Aurthorian legend this is the first step in said legend. Charis and Taliesin, and all the rest were real and I completely lived the story through their experience.

It was painfully obvious that Lawhead didn’t plan out “Grail” before writing “Arthur”.

I really like Arthurian legends. I really enjoyed it – one of the best books I’ve ever read! What an astoundingly good epic read. He quickly warms the babe and is rewarded with a small cry. The book chronicles the early life of Merlin, son of Taliesin, the greatest bard, and Charis, the Atlantean princess, from when he is a boy training to be a bard, to his growth into kingship, to his madness, and finally to his role as the legendary prophet of Britain. Or, more accurately, it’s exactly that bad, but no worse.

He has taken something that is so familiar and, judging by the many other adaptaions of the Arthurian legend, breathed wonderful new life into it.
