I can see how this book was a “breakthrough” when it was published in but in todays modern world there are much more interesting things to read out there. A favorite of Balzac’s, the book quickly won widespread popularity and has often been adapted for film and the stage. The more cold-blooded your calculations, the further you will go. If it had been any longer I would not have finished it. This book is more of a run-on sentence than it is a story, more of a stream-of-consciousness belch of words than it is a coherent narrative, more of a challenge to see what a reader can endure than it is anything approaching quality literature. Many of Balzac’s works have been made into films, and they continue to inspire other writers. Want to Read saving…. Unfortunately I don’t know enough about how the French lived in the 19th century to comment intelligently.

Had a huge struggle finishing this one. I guess Gorriot not good with classics, because apparently most people liked it a lot while I hated it.

I can only put it down to having read this in translation, but I found the characters both unreal and uninteresting, the plot muddled, uneven and unlikely, and the writing uninspiring to the point of being somnifacient.
